For starters, no matter the type of flooring you have, regular vacuuming should be a must. Learn to love it and treat it as a habit – never wait for dust and dirt to accumulate to a point where there's a visible layer. More dust means more chances of dust mites co-inhabiting your home, not to mention that these particles can cause a host of respiratory issues and even allergies. The same goes for dirt – your floors could be harboring bacteria without you even realizing it. Make sure you own a powerful-enough vacuum – while the one you use won't be nearly as strong as our industrial machinery, it should still be able to suck up even the most stubborn particles of dust and dirt.

Once you've made vacuuming into a hobby you indulge at least once a week, it's time to start thinking about more aggressive methods of cleaning. Even the best vacuuming effort will only do so much against spills and hardened dirt, so you'll have no choice but to mop semi-regularly if you aim to create an all-around safe environment.

The mop you use should be replaced fairly often (aside from the handle) – you definitely don't want to be wiping your floors with the same fibers for months, as all you'll be doing is re-applying the very things you're trying to get rid of. If you're mopping hardwood floors, take special care when picking your cleaning agent – certain chemicals can remove a hardwood floor's shine and compromise its finish considerably. Always check the cleaning solution's label to find out whether it's safe for application on wood. Likewise, while mopping hardwood, don't press too hard and rinse the mop regularly – pieces of debris lodged inside the fabric could scratch your wooden floor and leave visible marks.

Also, when talking hardwood, watch out for excess moisture – anyone who has seen soaked wood knows the devastating effect that moisture can have on it. Squeeze your mop so that it's not soaking in water and make sure to wipe the entire area with a dry cloth after you're done washing.

Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of hardwood and not all of them are cleaned the same way. Make sure to know exactly the type of hardwood flooring you have and adjust your cleaning efforts accordingly – if you don't know the first thing about wood and weren't around when the flooring was installed, have someone with carpenting experience come over and have a look. Hardwood floors are expensive, and while you're highly unlikely to cause enough damage to warrant replacement, there's no reason to rob the material of its natural beauty through bad cleaning choices.
